Body oils, lotion and sunscreen float. Left alone they gather at the waterline as a greasy ring and end up in the filter. The Scumbug is a flat, bug-shaped white sponge made to absorb them: it floats on the surface between soaks, and the maker says it takes up 40 times its own weight.

It is reusable – rinse it, squeeze it out and put it back – and the pack holds two. The listing gives no usable size and no lifespan, so replace a sponge when it no longer rinses clean. It handles oils and nothing else: sanitizer, filter and test strips keep their jobs.

Tip: A quick rinse under the shower before you get in does more than any sponge – what never enters the water does not have to be taken out of it.
